In remembrance of his mother and his lover, Chen changes his name to Xu Xiuyun. He later serves as an army doctor during the Korean War where he meets Wang Jindi, a nurse from Shanghai who falls instantly in love with him, although he still has feelings for Wang Biyun. Wang Jindi sees he will never forget Wang Biyun, so she changes her name to Wang Biyun. Years pass, and Jindi follows Xiuyun to Tibet where they are killed in an avalanche. While in Taiwan, the real Wang Biyun is still waiting and trying to find out what happened to Chen. Biyun buries Qiushui's mother and continues to pray for his return.
